Natural sources of water-soluble ingredients. Geochemical background. Point and non-point sources of soil and water pollution. Dynamics of organic and inorganic compounds in soils and groundwaters (physical properties, chemical properties, adsorption, evaporation, decomposition). Transformation of organic compounds in soils and groundwaters. Contemporary tendencies in the remediation and elimination of the threat to the soil and groundwater environment. Strategies for soil and groundwater treatment. Limiting the spread of pollutants in the soil and water environment. Methods of supporting self-purification of the soil and groundwater environment. Modern methods of soil and groundwater remediation: physical remediation and in-situ and ex-situ bioremediation. Application of simulation models for the assessment of the quality of the soil and groundwater environment. Management of polluted soils and groundwaters.

KNOWLEDGE:

EEP_W1 - functioning of biotic and abiotic elements of the environment (air, soil, water, plants and animals)

EEP_W2 - mechanisms and processes in the environment

EEP_W3 - different kinds of hazards and methods of their identification, reduction or elimination from the environment

EEP_W8 - rules of measurement and interpretation of monitoring data and assessment of the environment

SKILLS:

EEP_U1 - acquire, verify, evaluate and integrate environmental and geographical data from various sources

EEP_U2 - utilize obtained data for environmental and anthropogenic impact assessments

EEP_U5 - define engineering problem and indicate solutions by making calculations and individual projects

EEP_U6 - estimate advantages and disadvantages of chosen solution for environmental protection and engineering purposes

EEP_U10 - chose, plan, prepare and conduct their own experiments to obtain experimental data for the final project

SOCIAL SKILLS:

EEP_K2 - explain complex environmental issues with the context of their socio-economic impacts to the public

EEP_K4 - indicate the social responsibility for the environment, being aware of the short- and long-term implications of the choice of different engineering solutions

EEP_K5 - set priorities in solving engineering problems in the cooperation with other students

EEP_K6 - think critically and act creatively
